The College of Wooster golf team posted its best finish of the 2002 campaign this weekend at the rain-shortened Denison University Spring Invitational, coming in third among a field of 18 squads at the par-71, 6,559-yard Granville Golf Club in Granville, Ohio. Wooster shot 302 on Saturday (April 13) and played seven holes on Sunday before the event was cancelled due to the heavy rain, thus not counting any of the second round scores. The Scots' score was only higher than Ohio Wesleyan University (293) and DePauw University (296). Right behind Wooster were Mt. Union College (303), John Carroll University (305), Denison (306), Franklin College (307), Muskingum College (307), and Olivet College (308), followed by nine others all above 310. Individually, Scot freshman Joe Punturi shot a career-low 72 to finish in a tie for fourth and was just three strokes behind individual medalist Seth Taylor of Mt. Union (69). All four of Wooster's scores that counted were under 80 for the first time this spring, as next was junior Matt Elliott with a 76, which put him in a tie for 19th. Junior Jon Pintado and freshman Tyler Scott each carded a 77 to tie for 27th overall. Scot freshman Michael Tilden's score of 82 did not count.Ö Wooster will hope to carry its momentum into this weekend, when it hosts the Parlor Restaurant / Wooster Invitational at the Wooster Country Club on Friday and Saturday, April 19-20. |
