Scots Battle Elements En Route To Fourth-Place Finish
The College of Wooster golf team fought drizzle, high winds, and a tough course to finish in the middle of the pack at the Yellow Jacket Fall Invitational, hosted by Baldwin-Wallace College at the par-72, 6680-yard Hawks Nest Golf Course in nearby Creston, Ohio on Sept. 23-24.
Wooster placed fourth among seven teams in its second tournament of the 2001-02 season.
Otterbein College won the event, firing scores of 290-309=599, while host Baldwin-Wallace was runner-up (291-313=604). Next was John Carroll University (305-301=606).
The Scots (307-317=624) finished in front of Mt. Union College (311-315=626), Heidelberg College (330-319=649), and Case Western Reserve University (326-347=673).
Individually, Wooster was led by junior Matt Elliott (Wooster, Ohio / Wooster), who came in a tie for eighth among the 46 linksters after scoring 75-78=153. He was eight strokes behind Wes Harman of Otterbein, who captured medalist honors (71-74=145).
Two strokes behind Elliot was Scot freshman Tyler Scott (Loudonville, Ohio / Loudonville), who shot 77-78=155 for a 13th-place tie. Next for the Wooster contingent were junior Jon Pintado (Joplin, Mo. / Thomas Jefferson) and freshman Michael Tilden (Delaware, Ohio / Rutherford B. Hayes), who both finished tied for 20th. Pintado recorded a 75-83=158, while Tilden entered the clubhouse with 80-78=158.
Also for the Scots, freshman Joe Punturi (Elizabeth, Pa. / Elizabeth Forward) turned in an 84-84=168, good enough for a tie for 38th-place overall.
Wooster continues its fall schedule with the 27-hole John Carroll University Fall Invitational at Fowler's Mill Golf Club in Chesterland, Ohio, on Saturday, Sept. 29.
