Despite a big charge on day two from Malone College, the defending
NAIA national champions, Otterbein College managed to hold on and win its
third consecutive Parlor Restaurant/Bank One/College of Wooster
Invitational on Saturday (April 21) at Wooster Country Club.
As a team, Malone fired the lowest score of the second and final
round with a 302, but was only able to shave three strokes off of
Otterbein's lead, which began the day at 13. The Cardinals, who have now
won five of the last seven Wooster Invites, concluded the 36-hole event
with rounds of 306-305=611.
The race for individual medalist honors also came down to Malone
and Otterbein. But, in this one the Pioneers prevailed, as Greg Moss turned
in a 73 after a 76 on Friday to overcome the Cardinals' Wes Harman, who
finished the tournament one-stroke behind with 74-76=150.
Behind Otterbein and Malone (319-302=621) in the team standings
were DePauw University (328-307=635), Ohio Wesleyan University
(325-311=636), Mt. Union College (331-313=644), and Denison University
(332-321=653).
One of the biggest movers on the second day was host Wooster, which
moved up from a tie to 10th to being all alone in seventh-place after
shooting a 317 - 21 strokes better than its Friday round.
Rounding out the 15-team field were Hope College (325-333=658),
Wittenberg University (335-323=658), Heidelberg College (338-324=662),
Marietta College (332-331=663), John Carroll University (344-320=664),
Wabash College (353-335=688), Kenyon College (360-347=707), and Lake Erie
College (383-385=768).
The Scots' big move came largely due to the career-best effort from
Jon Pintado. Playing in front of relatives that came all the way from
Louisiana and Missouri to see him play, the sophomore carded a 73 - 17
strokes better than his opening round. Not only was that good enough to tie
for the second-best round of the day, but it bumped him 35 spots in the
individual standings to a tie for 27th-place.
Classmate Matt Elliott turned in a 77 to lead Wooster and tie for
13th overall in the field of 77 golfers with a 159. Senior Nick Balcken,
the team's leader in scoring average, shot an 81 for the second day in a
row to finish in a tie for 23rd.
Also for the Scots, sophomore Ryan Flynn and junior Nate Zahn tied
with each other for 62nd-place. Flynn had rounds of 90-86=176, while Zahn
shot 85-91=176.
Wooster will wrap up its season next weekend, when it travels to
nearby Garretsville, Ohio, for the North Coast Athletic Conference
Championships, which are being played at Sugarbush Golf Course.
