Golfers Come In Seventh at Muskie Invite

The College of Wooster's second golf tournament of the spring saw Wooster finish seventh overall among a field of 11 schools at the Muskingum College Invitational, played at the par-70, 6,508-yard Eaglesticks Golf Course in Zanesville, Ohio, on March 29-30.

Wooster's two-day total of 312-315=627 was good enough to edge Ohio Northern University (319-312=631), Capital University (312-319=631), Cedarville College (317-317=634), as well as one fellow North Coast Athletic Conference school - Kenyon College (363-354=717). But, the Scots' score was behind rivals Ohio Wesleyan University (282-294=576) and Wittenberg University (298-309=607).

Ohio Wesleyan won the invitational, followed by Otterbein College (285-300=585), host Muskingum (300-302=602), Mt. Union College (302-302=604), Wittenberg, and Marietta College (299-318=617).

Individually, sophomore Matt Elliott and senior Nick Balcken paced the Scots. Elliott tied for 20th in the field of 68, carding rounds of 73-79=152, while Balcken came in a tie for 29th after shooting scores of 79-75=154.

Sophomores Graham Binder, Ryan Flynn, and Jon Pintado also competed for Wooster. Binder was 47th overall (84-78=162), Flynn was right behind him in a tie for 48th (79-84=163), and Pintado tied for 51st (81-83=164).

"For the first tournament of the year up north, I guess I'm a little disappointed," commented Scot coach Rich Danch afterwards. "But, I should probably not expect to come out of the gates too quickly at this point. All I can do is hope that we've gained experienced to have a better showing at the next event."

Wooster has a chance to improve on its standing against many of the same teams on Saturday (March 31) and Sunday (April 1), as it will take part in the annual Strimer Invitational, played at the Battling Bishops' Oakhaven Goilf Course in Delaware, Ohio.
