Golf Team Places Fifth At JCU Invite

In its second tournament of the fall, The College of Wooster golf team finished fifth among 10 teams at the John Carroll University Fall Invitational, a 27-hole tournament conducted on Saturday (Sept. 30). Wooster totaled a 322 on the first 18 holes (river and maple courses) at Fowler's Mill Golf Course in Chesterland, Ohio, followed by a 165 on the final nine holes (lake course).

The Scots finished 23 shots off the lead, as Muskingum College won the event (302-162=464). Baldwin-Wallace College was runner-up (311-157=468), followed by Mount Union College (307-174=481) and host John Carroll (328-155=483). Wooster placed in front of a pair of North Coast Athletic Conference schools - Ohio Wesleyan University (320-174=494), which was sixth, and Kenyon College (364-190=554), which came in 10th. Rounding out spots seven through nine were Heidelberg College (333-183=516), Lake Erie College (348-182=530), and Case Western Reserve University (359-187=546).

Individually for the Scots, sophomore Matt Elliott led the team for the second tournament in a row, tying for third in a field of 54 competitors with scores of 38-39-38=115. Senior Nick Balcken and sophomore Jon Pintado tied for 21st overall, carding rounds of 44-37-44=125 and 44-42-39=125, respectively. Sophomore Ryan Flynn fired 40-40-46=126, good enough for a tie for 25th, while junior Dean Pasalis shot 42-42-44=128 to tie for 30th.

Wooster wraps up its fall schedule this coming weekend with a pair of tournaments, starting with the Lake Erie College Invitational on Saturday (Oct. 7). Then, the Scots will compete in the Baldwin-Wallace Invitational on Sunday (Oct. 8) and Monday (Oct. 9).
