Scot Golfers Open With Fifth-Place Showing
The College of Wooster golf team opened the fall portion of its
2000-01 season this past weekend (Sept. 16-17) with a fifth-place finish
among 11 teams that competed at the annual Denison University Fall Classic
held at Granville Golf Course in Granville, Ohio. Wooster was fifth after
the first day with a round of 314, and remained in that position despite
carding nine more strokes on day two.
Fellow North Coast Athletic Conference foe Ohio Wesleyan won the
tournament with a total of 607, followed closely by perennial power
Otterbein (614). In third-place were the host Big Red (621), just edging
out Baldwin-Wallace (622). Rounding out the field after the Scots were John
Carroll and DePauw (641), Mt. Union (646), Capital and Heidelberg (663),
and Wittenberg (666).
Individually, Wooster sophomore Matt Elliott, who was the runner-up
at the NCAC Championships last spring, led the team with scores of
75-78=153, while senior and two-time all-conference selection Nick Balcken
was next with rounds of 77-83=160. Sophomores Ryan Flynn and Jon Pintado
weren't far behind, coming in the clubhouse with scores of 78-83=161 and
86-79=165, respectively. In addition, junior Dean Pasalis shot 84-90=174.
The Scots continue their fall season on Sept. 30, when they are
scheduled to compete in the John Carroll University Fall Invitational at
Fowler's Mill Golf Club in Chesterland, Ohio.
