Wooster Comes Away With a Resounding 4-0 Victory at Denison
The College of Wooster field hockey team came back from a heartbreaking loss to Denison University two weeks ago and thrashed the Big Red 4-0 Wednesday for a key North Coast Athletic Conference win. The two played to a 1-1 deadlock through 100 minutes during a back-and-forth battle on Sept. 12 before Denison prevailed in a stroke-off, however on Wednesday, it was all Wooster. Right from the get-go, the Fighting Scots (4-4, 3-3 NCAC) controlled play, scoring just 1:06 into the action via a penalty corner. Freshman Nina Dine converted the opportunity for her first collegiate goal, with an assist from sophomore Brittany Montgomery. The Big Red (3-6, 2-2 NCAC) didn’t even get a shot off during the first half, but it remained 1-0. Wooster put the match away with a three-goal spurt during an 8:09 stretch of the second. First, freshman Eileen Barrer scored an unassisted goal with 26:03 remaining in regulation. She scored again, this time on a pass from Montgomery, less than two minutes later, which marked Barrer’s first career two-goal game. Montgomery scored herself at the 17:54 mark when the Scots converted another corner and freshman Briana Lynch assisted on that one. Overall, Wooster had a 12-2 advantage in shots and sophomore net-minder Izzy Maffetone did not even have to make a save to preserve the shutout. Next, the Scots will host rival Wittenberg University (4-2, 1-1 NCAC) on Saturday at 1 p.m. |
