Amanda Artman converted a penalty corner nearly 12 minutes into overtime,
propelling The College of Wooster to a 2-1 victory over host Kenyon College
Saturday afternoon in Gambier, Ohio. The victory improves the Scots to 11-3
on the season, but more importantly keeps their North Coast Athletic Conference
record spotless at a perfect 9-0, as Wooster remains atop the NCAC.
It was Kenyon (10-5, 5-4 NCAC) who struck first in the contest, sliding
a shot past Scot goalie Anne Leigh 26:48 into the game. The Ladies'
defense held the Scots to a mere two shots in the first period and fired
eight of their own, in taking the 1-0 lead into the half.
The Scots turned things around in the second period, with Miranda Leickly
rattling the cage with a goal at the 47:15 mark. Both teams battled through
the final 23 minutes of regulation, with Wooster out-firing the hosts 10-6
in the period, but neither team able to find the back of the net to break
the tie.
Both teams fired three shots each during the overtime period, but it was Artman, taking advantage of one of the Scots' 13 penalty corners on the afternoon, who netted the game-winner with 81:41 on the clock, lifting Wooster to the win.
Statistically, the Ladies out-shot the Scots by a slim 17-15 margin, but it was Wooster who won the penalty corner advantage with 13, as opposed to Kenyon's nine.
Defensively, Leigh shone in goal for the Scots, recording 10 saves on the
afternoon, while Kenyon's Karen Thompson registered nine saves for
the hosts.
The Scots return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 18, when they host NCAC foe Ohio Wesleyan at Cindy Barr Field. Game time is slated for 4:30 p.m.
