Montgomery's Two Second-Half Goals Lift Wooster Past Denison
WOOSTER, Ohio – A dominant second half, including two goals by Brittany Montgomery, keyed The College of Wooster’s 3-1 victory over visiting Denison University Wednesday afternoon as the Fighting Scots stayed undefeated in North Coast Athletic Conference field hockey action. The first half was quiet offensively with just six combined shots taken, but it did include one goal when Wooster’s Amanda Artman controlled a loose ball following a penalty corner and slid it past the diving Denison goalie for a 1-0 lead. It marked Artman’s sixth score of the year. Play picked up considerably in the second. Both squads had high-quality scoring opportunities and the Scots (5-2, 3-0 NCAC) were the first to strike when Anlyn Addis gained possession inside the circle on the left and crossed it to Montgomery, who in turn finished the play for her seventh goal this season and seemingly comfortable two-goal advantage. The Big Red (2-5, 1-2 NCAC) pulled within 2-1 just 2:32 later, though. Wooster was unable to clear a penalty corner and Brittany Paquette directed a shot from the left, which glanced off Wooster goalie Anne Leigh’s pad and then found the inside right of the cage. The scoreboard was lit up after another short time period (2:20), this time with Montgomery and the Scots effectively sealing the win. Montgomery rattled the cage off an assist from Artman when another corner wasn’t cleared by the defense. Denison never threatened again, as Wooster wound up with a 16-6 shot advantage, including 12-4 in the second half. Leigh made three saves, as did the Big Red’s Megan Leigl. The Scots continue NCAC play this Saturday morning when they host Kenyon College (7-2, 3-1 NCAC) at 11 a.m. |
