With darkness threatening to push Oberlin College’s and The College of Wooster’s field hockey game into another day, Claire Cheney scored with 9:02 remaining in regulation on Wednesday, giving Oberlin a 1-0 North Coast Athletic Conference victory.

The match didn’t begin until approximately 90 minutes after its anticipated starting time (4:30 p.m.) because an official was late. The late start combined with dark clouds meant that the game likely would have been continued Thursday, if it went into overtime.

Cheney’s unassisted goal came shortly after the Yeowomen (4-1, 1-1 NCAC) had earned a corner. She received the pass, maneuvered around a defender, and took a shot from the right side that hit off Anne Leigh’s pads before finding the back of the net.

Leigh was nearly perfect, as she finished with nine saves for Wooster (1-4, 1-1 NCAC), including stopping a penalty stroke in the first half. She also had help from first-year backs Anna Hurley and Kaitlin Toner, who combined for three defensive saves.

Oberlin held a 30-11 shot advantage and its goalie, Lauren Malinowski, made five saves to preserve the shutout.

The Scots travel to rival Wittenberg University (0-3, 0-1 NCAC) on Saturday for a 2 p.m. game.
