| Kelly Hubbell scored her second overtime
goal of the season this weekend. |
A late rally Sunday afternoon by Rhodes College prevented a weekend
sweep for The College of Wooster field hockey team, as the Lynx
scored twice in the final 11:25 to earn a 2-1 comeback win at Centre
College’s Kickoff Invitational in Danville, Ky. On Saturday,
Wooster used some late-game heroics of its own to pull out a 3-2
overtime victory over the University of the South.
Kelley Hubbell played the starring role for the second time on
the early season, delivering the game-winning goal, with an assist
from Angela Arnold on a penalty corner, just 3:18 into Saturday’s
extra session. Hubbell also scored an overtime goal on Sept. 1 at
Washington & Jefferson College.
The Scots found themselves down 2-0 to the University of the South
early in the second half, but valiantly fought back with two scores
during the final 17:25, including one from the stick of Lindsay
Tingley with just 1:29 remaining, to push it into overtime. Wooster’s
first goal came courtesy of Arnold on an assist from Hubbell.
The Scots used two goalies in that one, as Anne Leigh and Beth
Skelton combined for 11 saves. Leigh worked the first half and overtime
(five saves), while Skelton saw action all 35 minutes of the second
(six saves).
Saturday’s momentum may have carried into Sunday, as Wooster
scored just 4:51 into its match-up with Rhodes, when Ashley Minton
scored on a penalty corner. Arnold recorded another assist on the
score.
Despite peppering the Lynx goal with 25 more shots, the Scots could
not get another ball past Alice Cowley, who was credited with 12
saves, while Rhodes snuck two past Leigh, who had 10 saves.
