after scoring the game-winning goal against Wittenberg on
a penalty shot. |
In a battle of the past two North Coast Athletic Conference field
hockey champions on Saturday (Sept. 20), The College of Wooster
remained unbeaten in league play with a 1-0 victory over visiting
Wittenberg University at Cindy Barr Memorial Field.
Wittenberg is the defending NCAC champions, but the Tigers
are down somewhat in 2003, witness their 1-3 record in the conference
following Saturdays setback. But as expected, they played
rival Wooster (7-2, 4-0 NCAC) very tough.
Statistically, the Scots controlled
both halves, firing 14 shots in each of the two periods compared
to just nine for Wittenberg the entire game. Despite Woosters
dominance, it was not until 24:18 remained in the second stanza
that the Scots were able to score.
At that point, a Tiger defender was whistled for stopping
the ball with her foot on a close-range shot by Alanna Tryder,
and the officials awarded Wooster a penalty stroke. Katie McCoy,
who scored both of her goals last season on strokes, took the one-on-one
opportunity with the goaltender and scored.
Anne Leigh was once again
solid in goal for the Scots, as she made three saves while recording
her third shutout of the season.
Wooster, which has not blanked its last three opponents and
won six-straight after opening 0-2, will look to take a big step
towards the NCAC regular season crown this week. The Scots will
welcome winless Ohio Wesleyan University (0-5, 0-4 NCAC) to town
on Wednesday (Sept. 24) and then play at fellow first-place squad,
Denison University (5-3, 3-0 NCAC), on Saturday (Sept. 27).
