It was a tough opening weekend (Aug. 30-31) for The College of Wooster field hockey team, dropping a pair of out-of-region contests, including a 5-4 heartbreaker to St. Mary’s College of Maryland on Sunday, which put an end to the Scots’ 11-game win steak in overtime matches that had started back in Sept. 2000. Wooster was shutout 4-0 by Virginia Wesleyan College on Saturday.

The highlight of Wooster’s weekend came in the first 3:46 of the second half of Sunday’s game, when Lindsay Tingley scored three goals to give the Scots a 4-3 edge, marking the second year in a row a Wooster player has produced a hat trick. Alanna Tryder had one against Kenyon College in 2002. Assisting on Tingley’s goals were Elayne Brown, Kelley Hubbell, and Julia Tryder.

The Scots’ lone lead of the weekend was short lived, as St. Mary’s scored just 33 seconds later to tie it 4-4. After the early scoring barrage, though, the offenses were shutdown during the final 30:41 of the stanza and the game headed to overtime.

The Seahawks’ Sarah Sloane ended things with her third goal 5:33 into the extra session.

Statistically, it was an evenly played match as well with each team taking 18 shots, however, Wooster did hold a 12-6 edge in penalty corners.

The stats "lied" in Saturday’s match, as the Scots were only outshot 14-13 but let in four goals, including three in the second half. Wooster’s two goalies combined for six saves, while Margie Baker of Virginia Wesleyan earned a shutout by stopping eight shots.

On the weekend, goalkeeper Beth Skelton played the opening half of each game, as well as the overtime session of the St. Mary’s game. She combined for 10 saves and five goals allowed during 74:27, while the Scots’ two other goalies gave up four goals and made two saves in the two second halves.

Wooster, the preseason favorites to win the North Coast Athletic Conference, will play two regional opponents next weekend (Sept. 6-7).
