| Kelly Hubbell scored one
of the Scots' two goals against Oberlin. |
In an early, but important North Coast Athletic Conference field
hockey game, The College of Wooster proved to be just enough better
than visiting Oberlin College in a 2-0 decision on Thursday afternoon
(Sept. 18). Oberlin and Wooster had entered the match tied for first-place
with Denison University.
The final statistics were close, as the Scots (6-2, 3-0 NCAC)
held narrow advantages in shots (14-11) and penalty corners (6-4),
but the difference was that the hosts got big plays on both ends
of the field from Kelley Hubbell and Elayne Brown to prevail.
Late in the opening half, Hubbell shoved home her second goal
of the season on an assist from Katie McCoy, thus giving Wooster
some breathing room as well as the momentum going into halftime.
The Scots made it 2-0 a little over 15 minutes into the second
stanza, when Brown, an exchange student from Northern Ireland,
found the back of the net, marking her first goal with Wooster.
She got help on the play from Julia Tryder, as the defensive specialist
picked up her third assist of 2003.
Hubbell and Brown were active defensive as well. Both recorded
defensive saves to help out goalie Anne Leigh, who notched her
fifth win while producing three saves, while on the other side
of the field, Siv Tang did her best to keep the Yeowomen (2-3,
2-1 NCAC) in it with seven saves.
Next, the Scots will put their six-game win streak up against
Wittenberg University (2-4, 1-2 NCAC) on Saturday (Sept. 20) at
home, starting at 2 p.m. |
