game-winning goal midway through the second half. |
The College of Wooster field hockey team got its quest for the 2003
North Coast Athletic Conference title off to a good start on Tuesday
(Sept. 9) with a 2-1 victory at Kenyon College. Wooster (3-2,
1-0 NCAC), the preseason favorite in the NCAC, got on to the board
on its second shot of the day – a penalty stroke by Miranda
Leickly – 15 minutes into the game. It was the freshman back’s
first career goal.
Despite peppering the Kenyon goal with seven more shots in the
first half, the Scots could not extend their lead until the midway
point of the second half, when senior forward Alanna Tryder scored
unassisted. It was the first goal of 2003 for Tryder, who led the
team in scoring last fall.
The Ladies (1-3, 1-1 NCAC) answered with a goal just over two minutes
later, however, Wooster’s new starting goalie, freshman Anne
Leigh, turned away their final two shots to preserve the victory.
Leigh finished with six saves on the afternoon, as the Scots outshot
their hosts 13-7.
Wooster continues its early NCAC schedule on Saturday (Sept. 13)
with a road trip to Earlham College (1-2, 1-1 NCAC), followed by
its home debut on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 14) against a winless
Washington & Jefferson College team (0-3) at 2 p.m.
