The College of Wooster field hockey team won its fourth and fifth consecutive games this weekend (Sept. 12-13), earning a 4-1 decision at Earlham College on Saturday and returning home to rout Washington & Jefferson College 11-0 on Sunday afternoon. The 11-goal margin marked Wooster's biggest victory since defeating Earlham by the same exact score early in the 1996 season.
In Saturday's contest with Earlham, the Scots (5-2) were never threatened as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the second half en route to improving to 2-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Wooster got goals from Ashley Hecker and Kelley Hubbell, which were assisted by Lindsay Tingley and Katie McCoy, respectively, during a first half, in which the Scots outshot their hosts 11-5.
Wooster was even more dominant in the second (18-2 shot advantage), despite only outscoring the Quakers 2-1. One of those goals came just 2:08 into the stanza, when Alanna Tryder, on the help of another assist from Tingley, gave the Scots a three-goal bulge. Earlham cut it to one at the 24:17 mark, while Hecker knocked home her second of the day to cap the scoring.
Sunday's game against Washington & Jefferson, a third-year varsity program, was a rout from the get-go. It did take the Scots almost 10 minutes into the match to get the scoreboard warmed up, however, once Alanna Tryder scored 9:39 into the non-league contest, the floodgates opened up. Tryder put in her second goal about six minutes later, which was the beginning of a six-goal explosion by Wooster during a 8:55 stretch, as the Scots eventually took an 8-0 lead into halftime.
Joining Tryder in the goal column twice were Anlyn Addis and Katelin Bugler, while other tallies came from Ashley Arnold, Ashley Hecker, Sloan McBride, Ashley Minton, and Tingley. Katy Baron assisted on each of Tryder's scores, and equaling her two helpers was Hubbell.
Defensively on the weekend, Wooster starter Anne Leigh played the entirety of the Earlham game, notching six saves, while she split time with Amanda DeGaetano and Michelle Digaetano on Sunday. Digaetano was the only Scot to record a save (two) against Washington & Jefferson.
Wooster continues its four-game home stretch on Thursday (Sept. 18), as it welcomes NCAC foe Oberlin College (2-2, 2-0 NCAC) to Cindy Barr Memorial Field, starting at 4:30 p.m.
