The College of Wooster field hockey team scored three times during a 3:04 time period late in the opening half on Wednesday night (Sept. 25) to build a 5-0 halftime lead and cruised to a four-goal decision over host Washington & Jefferson College, a second-year varsity program.

Two of the goals during the decisive stretch came off the stick of senior Grace Gibson, her first of 2002 but fourth and fifth of her career, while junior Katie McCoy capped the first-half scoring by converting a penalty stroke to mark her first goal of the season.

Wooster (5-2) built a 2-0 lead in the first 15 minutes of action via goals from sophomore Ashley Hecker - her fourth of the year - and junior Alanna Tryder.

Dishing out assists on Wednesday for the Scots were sophomore Kelley Hubbell on Hecker's score, McCoy on Tryder's, senior Lindsey Boardman on Gibson's initial goal, and sophomore Ashley Arnold on Gibson's second.

Washington & Jefferson (0-5) did get on the board with 4:12 left to play, as Heather Amistade scored on one of the team's three shots during the non-conference contest.

All three of Wooster's goalies saw action and combined to make one save, while Presidents' starter Jenna Hungerman tallied 10 saves in the first 35 minutes of action.

The Scots continue their four-match road swing this Saturday (Sept. 28), as they will travel to Richmond, Ind., for their second meeting of the season with Earlham College (4-4, 2-3 NCAC) at noon. Wooster won the first one 1-0 in overtime.
