Three Scots Named All-Great Lakes Region
» Complete All-Great Lakes Region Team A trio of College of Wooster field hockey players were named to the All-Great Lakes Team, announced the National Field Hockey Coaches Association recently, as senior back Kate Persing (Canton, Conn. / Kimball Union Academy – N.H.) earned first-team honors and junior back Anna Hurley (Oxford, Ohio / Talawanda) and sophomore forward Brittany Montgomery (Glens Falls, N.Y. / Glens Falls) picked up second-team recognition. Persing, a first-time all-region award winner, was the anchor of Wooster’s defense, which held 16 of its 18 opponents to two goals or less, including two shutouts. Overall, the Scots averaged 1.56 goals allowed on 11.22 shots per game, while individually, Persing registered one assist and one defensive save. For her career, the defensive standout was a three-year starter (55 of 60 games played), only missing most of her sophomore season due to injury. Hurley, also a newcomer to the All-Great Lakes Team, played an integral role in Wooster’s backfield, alongside Persing. The Scots’ defensive highlights were 4-0 shutouts of Denison University (Sept. 26) and Ohio Wesleyan University (Oct. 10), avenging losses to each of those squads from earlier in the season. Statistically, Hurley led the team in defensive saves for the third year in a row, recording five while starting all 18 games this fall. Montgomery, another first-time pick to the all-region team, was the key cog to Wooster’s league-leading offense (2.22 goals per game). She totaled 22 points on eight goals and a squad-high six assists as a member of the starting lineup every contest. Montgomery posted season-high four-point games twice, as she scored one goal and passed out two assists at Denison (Sept. 26) and blasted in two goals at Transylvania University (Oct. 20). As a team, the Scots were part of a three-way tie for first-place in the North Coast Athletic Conference (8-4) and went 11-7 overall, despite seeing their returning All-American forward go down with a season-ending injury during the second game and starting five freshmen. |
