Following a light week of just one non-league game, The College of Wooster returns to its chase for the 2007 North Coast Athletic Conference championship with two such contests. Wooster enters this week in a three-way tie for third-place in the NCAC, and the top-six teams in the standings all have two or three losses, which will make for an interesting race over the next three weeks for the four-team NCAC Tournament. On Wednesday, Oct. 10, the Scots host one of those teams they are tied with, Ohio Wesleyan University (7-4, 4-3 NCAC), at 4:30 p.m. This Saturday, Oct. 13, Wooster will be at league-leading Kenyon College (6-7, 5-2 NCAC), scheduled for a 10 a.m. start. The Scots will be looking to avenge losses from earlier this fall against both of this week’s opponents, as they fell 2-0 at Ohio Wesleyan Sept. 8 and 2-0 at home to Kenyon Sept. 15.
Last Week: Wooster dropped its lone game to slip back to .500 for the season (5-5).
On Oct. 6, the Scots’ four-game win streak came to an end when DePauw University scored with 8:52 left during the second overtime to upend Wooster 3-2 in non-conference action at Cindy Barr Memorial Field. Early on, the Scots controlled play, even scoring just 3:34 in when Eileen Barrer (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) sent one into the back of the cage for her sixth goal of the season. Wooster outshot DePauw 9-4 over the first 35 minutes, but the Tigers tied it up late in the half on an unassisted goal. During the second period, the Scots would only get one shot off – a goal – as Taylor Lamborn (Stevenson, Md. / McDonough School) connected on a pass from Brittany Montgomery (Glens Falls, N.Y. / Glens Falls) with 27:51 remaining. It marked Lamborn’s second goal and Montgomery’s sixth assist. DePauw evened the score a mere 51 seconds later and held a significant advantage in shots throughout the rest of regulation, but Wooster’s defense was up to the task, maintaining the 2-2 tie. After a scoreless first overtime, the Tigers broke through on their first shot of the second extra session. Scot goalkeeper Izzy Maffetone (Setauket, N.Y. / Ward Melville) made a career-high 13 saves on the day. |
