After moving into a tie for first-place in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings, The College of Wooster looks to stay in that position during a busy stretch this week with three games over a four-day period, starting Thursday, Oct. 18. That afternoon, the Fighting Scots will welcome third-place Oberlin College (6-8, 5-3 NCAC) to Cindy Barr Memorial Field for a 4:30 p.m. match-up. Wooster will be aiming for its second-straight season sweep of Oberlin, having previously defeated the Yeowomen 3-2 on the road Sept. 20. This weekend, the Scots will first travel to Lexington, Ky., where they’ll face non-league foe Transylvania University (3-9) on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 4 p.m. In three prior meetings, Wooster has never lost to Transy, including a 3-0 shutout last fall. The Scots will be right back in action Sunday, Oct. 21, at arch-rival Wittenberg University (7-6, 4-4 NCAC) with start time scheduled for 1 p.m. Wooster has won five in a row against the Tigers, including a 3-1 decision at home earlier this year (Sept. 29).
Last Week: The Scots, who started the season with three conference losses, won their fifth and sixth consecutive NCAC games to improve to 7-5 overall and leapt into a tie for first-place in the league (6-3).
On Oct. 10, Wooster found the back of the Ohio Wesleyan University cage three times during the first half and cruised from there to a 4-0 triumph over the visiting Battling Bishops. Sophomore Brittany Montgomery (Glens Falls, N.Y. / Glens Falls) gave the Scots all the offense they would need with just over two minutes gone in the first half on an unassisted score, marking her third goal this fall. It remained 1-0 until the 13:39 mark when freshman Eileen Barrer (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) tallied the first of her two goals on the day, this one via an assist from freshman Stephanie Standera (Penfield, N.Y. / Penfield). Just 54 seconds later, freshman Briana Lynch (North East, Md. / North East) beat the defense for an unassisted goal and a 3-0 lead. The second half was quiet, with Barrer’s eighth goal of the campaign being the only scoring. She was assisted by freshman Taylor Lamborn (Stevenson, Md. / McDonough School) on that one. For the game, Wooster goalie Izzy Maffetone (Setauket, N.Y. / Ward Melville) was credited with three saves while notching her second shutout.
On Oct. 13, Barrer and Lynch scored just 26 seconds apart midway through the opening half, propelling the Scots to a 2-1 victory at Kenyon College, which results in a tie between the two for first-place in the NCAC. Wooster struck first, with Barrer connecting on her team-best ninth goal, thanks to an assist from Lynch. Moments later, Lynch scored unassisted for a two-goal margin. Kenyon cut that lead in half with just over six minutes remaining in the first stanza, however, that would be all of the scoring. Maffetone recorded five saves to help preserve the win. |
