Having won four-straight games, all of the North Coast Athletic Conference variety, The College of Wooster will take a break from league play in its lone contest this week. On Saturday, Oct. 6, DePauw University (6-4), a traditional non-conference opponent for the Fighting Scots, pays a visit to Cindy Barr Memorial Field. Wooster has the upper hand for the most part with DePauw, currently holding a 14-4 advantage in the all-time series, but the Tigers have emerged victorious each of the last two meetings (2-1 in 2006 and 4-0 in 2005). Saturday’s game time is set for 11 a.m.
Last Week: The Scots’ offense continued to flourish, combining to beat two opponents by 7-1 and going over the .500 mark both overall (5-4) and in the NCAC (4-3).
On Sept. 26, Wooster came back from a heartbreaking 2-1 stroke-off loss to Denison University two weeks prior and thrashed the Big Red 4-0 for a key conference win. Right from the get-go, the Scots controlled play this time around, scoring just 1:06 into the action via a penalty corner. Freshman Nina Dine (Tuckahoe, N.Y. / E.C. Fieldston School) converted the opportunity for her first collegiate goal, with an assist from sophomore Brittany Montgomery (Glens Falls, N.Y. / Glens Falls). Wooster would put the match away with a three-goal spurt during an 8:09 stretch of the second. First, freshman Eileen Barrer (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) scored an unassisted goal with 26:03 remaining in regulation. She scored again, this time on a pass from Montgomery, less than two minutes later. Montgomery scored herself at the 17:54 mark when the Scots converted another corner and freshman Briana Lynch (North East, Md. / North East) assisted on that one.
On Sept. 29, Wooster scored on three of four penalty corners during the first half, opening up a 3-0 lead at the break, and went on to a 3-1 victory over rival Wittenberg University during NCAC action. The Scots scored 4:30 into the action when Lynch rattled the cage with an assist from Barrer. It remained 1-0 until fairly late in the half when Barrer put in a goal via an assist by Dine, following a penalty corner, at the 7:45 mark. Then, Wooster took complete control, as with just :16 remaining, Lynch would score unassisted for a three-goal cushion. Scot goalie Izzy Maffetone (Setauket, N.Y. / Ward Melville) produced five saves, all in the second half, on 16 total shots to help preserve the win.
NCAC Player of the Week: For her efforts (see above), Scot freshman forward Eileen Barrer (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) was named North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week for field hockey. It marks the second-straight week she has garnered the honor. |
