The College of Wooster field hockey team will put its first-place standing
and unblemished record in the North Coast Athletic Conference on the line
twice this week, starting with a game Thursday, Sept. 28, at defending
conference champion, Oberlin College (4-3, 2-2 NCAC). The Fighting Scots
are 49-8-4 all-time against the Yeowomen, but endured three tough defeats
to them during 2005 as Oberlin narrowly got past Wooster 1-0 and 4-3 in
strokes during the regular season and then triumphed 3-0 in the NCAC Tournament
championship game. Also, on Saturday, Sept. 30, the Scots welcome Earlham
College (0-6, 0-4 NCAC) to Cindy Barr Memorial Field for an 11 a.m. tilt.
The two already played earlier this fall (Sept. 9), with Wooster winning
4-0 at Earlham.
Last Week: The Scots won a pair of matches, both of the NCAC variety,
to remain the only undefeated team in the conference and to improve to 6-2
overall.
On Sept. 20, Wooster was too much for visting Denison University, beating
the Big Red by a 3-1 count, thanks to two goals by Brittany Montgomery
(Glens Falls, N.Y. / Glens Falls). The first half was quiet offensively
with just six combined shots taken, but it did include one goal when the
Scots? Amanda Artman (Shaker Hts., Ohio / Shaker Heights) controlled
a loose ball following a penalty corner and slid it past the diving Denison
goalie for a 1-0 lead. Wooster was first to strike in the second, when
Anlyn Addis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Ann Arbor Pioneer) gained possession
inside the circle on the left and crossed it to Montgomery, who finished
the play, giving the Scots what seemed to be a comfortable cushion. The
Big Red pulled within 2-1 just 2:32 later, though, when Wooster was unable
to clear a penalty corner. Montgomery answered 2:20 later on an Artman assist
when another corner wasn?t cleared by the defense for a 3-1 Scot advantage
and Denison never threatened after that point. Anne Leigh (Englewood,
Colo. / Cherry Creek) made three saves in goal for the Scots.
On Sept. 23, Montgomery again starred as she converted an Addis pass for the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over visiting Kenyon College. It came 2:58 into the second half. Defensively, Leigh recorded her fifth shutout of the season, stopping five Ladies' shots in the process.
NCAC Player of the Week: For her efforts (see above), Brittany
Montgomery (Glens Falls, N.Y. / Glens Falls) was named the North Coast
Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week for field hockey. It marks the second
time already the freshman forward has been bestowed with the award. |
