The College of Wooster’s Katie Wieferich won her second race of the year, setting a new course record in the process, in leading the Scot women to a third-place finish Saturday at the Wooster Invitational. Wieferich, a two-time track All-American, cruised the 5K course in 17:50, over one full minute ahead of the runner-up (18:51). Case Western Reserve won the women’s team competition with 23 points and Ashland placed second with 53 points. The Scots tallied 72 points to be ahead of Keynon (88), Notre Dame (132), Ursuline (194), Hiram (196) and Cuyahoga Community College (223).
Also in the top-20 for Wooster was Nicole Calderone, who placed 12th overall (20:23), and Ashely Zervos, who placed 14th (20:34). Caitlin O’Riordan and Sarah Lloyd rounded out Wooster’s scorers, placing 21st (21:33) and 25th (21:45), respectively.
On the men’s side, Wooster placed fourth of six teams, scoring 102 points, behind Ashland (16), Case Western (50), and Kenyon (97), but ahead of Notre Dame (121) and Hiram (190).
Rudy Gilman and Dave Thomas finished neck-and-neck to lead the Scots, placing 16th (27:59.01) and 17th (27:59.75), respectively. Also placing in the top-20 was Mark DeWine, who finished 20th with a time of 28:25. Rounding out the Scots’ scorers was Jeff Jacobs, who finished in 29:08, good for 34th place, and Rick Workman, whose time of 29:20 landed him a 37th-place finish.
The Scot harriers will next compete at the All-Ohio Championships to be held in Deleware, Ohio on Oct. 6.
