The College of Wooster cross country team put forth a good showing at
the Wooster Relays held Wednesday, in its final tune-up before the North
Coast Athletic Conference championships to be held on Oct. 28 in Richmond,
Ind.
The annual meet, now in its seventh year, is a unique non-scoring event, with individuals from NCAA Divison II Edinboro University, as well as squads from Wooster and Otterbein College racing four different distances and then adding up their times for an individual finish. The women's race consisted of 2000 meters, 600 meters, 800 meters, and 1000 meters, with a seven-minute break between each, for a total of 4400 meters, while the men's portion was a 6800-meter race with intervals of 2000, 1000, 800, and 3000 meters.
On the women's side, Scot running sensation Katie Wieferich landed
a second-place finish in the field of 25, crossing the line 16 seconds behind
Edinboro's Rachel Lanzel, with a time of 19:17. Ashley Zervos
clocked in a 21:01 for an 11th-place finish, with teammate Nicole Calderone right behind in 12th (21:07). Rouding out the top Wooster
runners were Sara Lloyd, who placed 14th (21:48), and Emily Elderbrock
with a time of 22:14, good for 16th.
For the men, Dave Thomas was the Scots' top placer, finishing 15th
in the field of 26, with a time of 23:04. Mark Dewine (23:12), Rick
Workman (23:40), Terry Workman (23:50), and Nate Malcomb (23:51)
took places No. 17-20, respectively, to round out the top finishers. Edinboro's
Dave Niemira won the men's event with a time of 21:33 |
