In their first scored meet of 2005, The College of Wooster men’s and women’s cross country teams both placed second at the Wooster Invitational held Saturday at L.C. Boles Memorial Golf Course. Ashland University, the nearby NCAA Div. II school, won each division, with its men outscoring the Scots 15-50 and its women totaling 20 points to Wooster’s 41 and Cuyahoga Community College’s 83.

Highlighting the Scots’ individual results, junior Katie Wieferich covered the 5K course in 18:44 to win her second race this fall. In fact, she finished 36 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor, Erin Stauffer (19:20) of Ashland. Also scoring for the Wooster women were sophomore Nicole Calderone, who placed eighth (21:08), as well as junior Ashley Zervos, junior Emily Rackley, and sophomore Cara Stoddard, who ran 11th (21:31), 12th (21:43), and 13th (21:44), respectively.

On the men’s side, the Scots’ top harriers were the senior-freshman tandem of Colin Turner and Mark DeWine, who finished the 8K course in 11th (28:22) and 12th (28:24), respectively. Rounding out the team’s top-five were freshman Bryan Loy, junior Nate Malcomb, and freshman Paul Thompson, who crossed the line 14th (29:32), 15th (29:37), and 17th (30:10), respectively.

Wooster will next be in action Friday, Sept. 30, at the Denison Invitational.
