Scots Running Against the Rest of the Buckeye State Friday
The College of Wooster, along with approximately 40 other schools across the Buckeye State, will take part in the All-Ohio Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships this Friday, Oct. 10, at the Methodist Theological School and Delaware Golf Club in Delaware, Ohio. The annual meet dates back to 1955 for the men and 1981 for the women. It is a unique competition, bringing together runners from NCAA Div. I, II, and III and NAIA institutions to race against each other. This year’s schedule has the men’s varsity 8K championship at 2 p.m., followed 45 minutes later by the women’s varsity 5K. Additionally, there will be open divisions, as a men’s open race and a women’s open race will take place at 3:30 p.m. and 4:15 p.m., respectively. Last season, the Fighting Scots’ men’s team finished 26th overall (12th of 20 among Div. III), while the women came in 28th-place (13th of 22 among Div. III). Wooster’s women won the college division championship of the All-Ohio’s in 1994, while the Scots’ Katie Wieferich was the overall individual champion in 2006 with a time of 18:11.5 over the 5K course. Last Meet: On Sept. 27, both Wooster teams finished in 13th-place at the highly-competitive Otterbein Invitational. The men’s field consisted of 21 teams and the women included 23. In the women’s 6K, freshman Sarah Appleton (Portsmouth, Ohio / Notre Dame) led the Scots for the first time in her career while placing 41st overall with a time of 23:42.8. Suzanne Capehart (Herndon, Va. / Oakton) was not far behind, finishing 49th (23:53.8), while a trio of seniors in Emily Elderbrock (Ashland, Ohio / Ashland), Becca Thomas (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria), and Anna Gil (San Francisco, Calif. / Lick-Wilmerding) completed Wooster’s scoring. They ran close together, with Elderbrock in 113th (25:12.7), Thomas in 125th (25:24.3), and Gil in 128th (25:26.8). The men’s 8K race saw the Scots being paced by junior Terry Workman (Hillsboro, Ohio / Greenfield McClain) and senior Mark DeWine (Cedarville, Ohio / Bishop O’Connell – Va.), who came in 38th (26:12.4) and 54th (26:31.0), respectively. Finishing just outside of the top-100 was up-and-coming Micah Caunter (Mayfield Village, Ohio / Mayfield), as the freshman took 106th (27:18.3), followed relatively closely by junior teammate Rick Workman (Hillsboro, Ohio / Greenfield McClain) in 141st (27:54.8) and senior Brian Loy (Oxford, Ohio / Talawanda) in 154th (28:07.2). |
