The College of Wooster men’s and women’s cross country teams will host the 4th annual Jim Bean Classic, honoring the former long-time coach of the Fighting Scots, this Friday, Oct. 12. This season’s event, which will take place over a hilly course, will be a scored tri-meet among Hiram College, Lake Erie College, and Wooster. Both the men and women will run a 5K, starting at 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., respectively. Last fall, the Scots swept the Jim Bean Classic, with the men scoring the minimum 15 in their four-team field and the women tallying 18 points in a three-team grouping.
Last Week: On Oct. 5, three Wooster runners were among the top-100 in their respective races at the annual All-Ohio Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships, which led the Scots to 26th- and 28th-place showings in the large men’s and women’s fields, respectively. The event brings together 44 teams, spanning NCAA Div. I, II, and III and NAIA schools from across the Buckeye State.
Among Div. III teams only, the Wooster men came in 12th of 20 and the women finished 13th of 22.
Individually, sophomore Rick Workman (Hillsboro, Ohio / Greenfield McClain) and senior Rudy Gilman (Silverton, Ore. / Silverton Union) paced the Scots, crossing the line in 96th and 97th overall with respective 8K times of 28:26.2 and 28:26.6. That put them 31st and 32nd in the Div. III field. Also scoring for the Wooster men was senior Colin Haverkamp (New Brighton, Minn. / Irondale), who placed 167th overall (30:00.1), as well as sophomore Jeff Jacobs (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier Twp.) in 180th (30:24.7) and junior Paul Thompson (Oberlin, Ohio / Oberlin) in 185th (30:30.2).
In the women’s 5K, freshman Suzanne Capehart (Oak Hill, Va. / Oakton) led the Scots for the fourth time in as many meets, finishing 91st out of 296 harriers, which was 30th-best in Div. III, in a time of 21:02.0. Next was senior Nicole Calderone (Grass Lake, Mich. / Greenhills School), who took 172nd-place (22:37.3), while running closely together were sophomore Caitlin O’Riordan (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Chagrin Falls) and senior teammate Erin Fortin (Fernandina Beach, Fla. / Neuqua Valley – Ill.) as they crossed in 191st (23:05.6) and 198th (23:12.6). Chelsea Fisher (Metuchen, N.J. / Metuchen), a freshman, was the Scots’ fifth point producer, finishing 219th (23:46.9).
