The College of Wooster men’s and women’s cross country teams will get to see if all of their training has paid off this week, when they compete at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships. The 24th annual event will take place Saturday, Oct. 27, on the campus of Kenyon College, starting with the women’s 6000-meter race at 11 a.m., followed by the men’s 8000-meter competition at 11:45 a.m. In a pre-championship poll, conducted by the coaches, Wooster is picked to finish sixth of nine teams in the women’s field and seventh of 10 in the men, while Ohio Wesleyan University (women) and Allegheny College (men) are the favorites. Also of note, the Scots had the individual champion each of the last two years, as alum Katie Wieferich won the women’s championship.

Last Week: On Oct. 17, Wooster hosted the non-scoring Wooster Relays, as the Scots held their annual unique meet against Edinboro University. The women ran four separate intervals, which added up to 5400 meters, while the men also went out on the course four times for a total of 6800 meters.

Wooster’s results were highlighted by a fifth-place finish from freshman Suzanne Capehart (Oak Hill, Va. / Oakton), who turned in a time of 20:14. Senior Erin Fortin (Fernandina Beach, Fla. / Neuqua Valley – Ill.), freshman Chelsea Fisher (Metuchen, N.J. / Metuchen), and junior Emily Elderbrock (Ashland, Ohio / Ashland) also came in the top-10, taking eighth (21:00), ninth (21:12), and 10th (21:50), respectively.

Among the men’s harriers, Wooster had one top-10 representative, as sophomore Terry Workman (Hillsboro, Ohio / Greenfield McClain) totaled 21:49 for 10th-place. Not far behind him was senior Rudy Gilman (Silverton, Ore. / Silverton Union) in 11th (22:21), sophomore Jeff Jacobs (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier Twp.) in 12th (22:37), and sophomore Rick Workman (Hillsboro, Ohio / Greenfield McClain) in 13th (22:37).
