White, Wieferich Receive Academic Awards from CCCA
Senior Tiffany White (Kent, Ohio / Kent Roosevelt), sophomore Katie Wieferich (Marietta, Ohio / Marietta), and the entire College of Wooster women’s cross country team were honored recently by the NCAA Div. III Cross Country Coaches Association. Individually, White and Wieferich were presented with All-Academic Intercollegiate Cross Country Team certificates, while Wooster as a whole was labeled an All-Academic Team by the organization. During the fall of 2004, the Scots’ 24-member roster compiled a 3.541 grade-point average – the 21st-highest out of 377 Div. III schools that field a women’s cross country team. “Our women’s cross country program has always had a high standard academically. We’ve had the highest GPA in the department for several years,” commented Wooster’s long-time coach Dennis Rice, who has guided the women to eight top-three finishes in the North Coast Athletic Conference in 16 years, highlighted by back-to-back-to-back championships from 1996-98. “Part of our proud tradition is not only athletic success, but academic success.” “For Katie and Tiffany, they’ve competed at a high level at our regional championships, and also done a terrific job in the classroom to earn this honor,” Rice added. At the 2004 Div. III Great Lakes Region Championships, Wieferich finished in 36th as an individual with a team-leading time of 22:49.3 and White came in 45th-place (23:05.4), helping Wooster end up in 13th of 26 teams. The Scots were fourth of nine at last fall’s NCAC meet, with Wieferich and White pacing the squad in 11th- (24:10) and 16th-place overall (24:31), respectively. |
