Steiner Voted Second-Team Academic All-American
A biology major, Steiner was the Fighting Scots’ leading offensive player this spring, batting .384 with 10 home runs and 49 RBI. In fact, he was the first Wooster player to win the team’s triple crown (leader in batting average, home runs, and RBI) since Trevor Urban in 1998. Steiner led the North Coast Athletic Conference in RBI and ended up in a tie for the league lead in homers, and nationally, ranks 33rd in the most recent NCAA Div. III statistics in home runs (0.23 per game). He also contributed 42 runs scored, 11 doubles, 16 walks, and 12 hit by pitches, while compiling a .646 slugging percentage .472 on-base percentage, and .991 fielding percentage as a standout first baseman. For his efforts, Steiner earned first-team All-Mideast Region honors from the American Baseball Coaches’ Association as well as a spot on the All-NCAC First Team. Steiner, who graduated magna cum laude from Wooster and made Dean’s List every semester, played two years with the Scots after transferring from Hesston (Kan.) College. For his career, he hit .377, finishing just outside the school’s top-10 list for batting average, in addition to recording 23 doubles, 12 home runs, and 72 RBI. Created in 1952, the Academic All-America Teams program now annually honors 816 male and female student-athletes who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, a 2,000-member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. |
