Kapferer Earns Conference's Weekly Honor
During that stretch, Kapferer went 12-for-19 (.632) from the plate with four home runs and 11 RBI before sitting out the final game of Wooster's 7-0 week. He also reached base three times via walks and was hit by pitches twice for a .708 on-base percentage, and doubled once and scored nine runs. On Tuesday (April 22), Kapferer began his tear by blasting a home run in each game of a sweep at Hiram College. Overall, he went 5-for-7 and drove in five while leading the Scots to 13-1 and 21-10 wins. Kapferer then provided Wooster with a big insurance run on a solo homer in the eighth inning during Wednesday's (April 23) 13-9 decision over Otterbein College. Kapferer capped the week by going 6-for-9, including a double, a home run, and six RBI over the first three games of the Scots' key sweep against Allegheny College. In the opener (April 26), he kept the key four-run sixth inning alive with a two-out RBI double that pulled Wooster within 4-3, and added a leadoff home run in the fifth inning of game two, which tied it at 4-4. On Sunday (April 27), the 6-7, 245-pound left-hander was a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI in the first game. Kapferer, who entered last week batting .281 (9-for-32) with one home run and seven RBI through 22 games of his rookie season, appears to have earned a permanent starting job at first base or designated hitter. He's now averaging .412 with nine of his 21 hits having gone for extra bases. The Scots, up 11 spots to No. 13 in this week's American Baseball Coaches Association Div. III Poll, host an intriguing match-up against seventh-ranked Heidelberg College (26-8) on Wednesday (April 30) at 4 p.m. They are the top-two rated teams in the Mideast Region. |
